Dialysis department staff at Rijnstate hospital preparing to integrate SAM, the autonomous UV-C disinfection robot, into their workflow during the European Transplant Games 2026

Stronger Together: How Rijnstate Combines Innovation and Care During the European Transplant Games 2026

The organisation of the European Transplant Games 2026 recently published an article about Rijnstate's role during the Games. It also describes how the hospital uses innovative technology to maintain the highest standards of care and hygiene. A perfect moment to reflect on this collaboration.

In June 2026, Arnhem will welcome hundreds of participants from across Europe for the European Transplant Games 2026. This remarkable event celebrates what is possible after an organ transplant. From swimming and athletics to cycling and tennis — it is a celebration of resilience, health and human connection.

Behind the scenes, an event of this scale demands a great deal from the local healthcare infrastructure. Rijnstate, one of the participating care partners, plays a key role. During the Games, the hospital opens its dialysis departments in Arnhem and Zevenaar to international participants who depend on dialysis. An achievement that requires extra effort, flexibility and organisation from the care teams.

Innovation where it matters most

The increased activity during the Games also places greater pressure on facility services. More patients, more rooms to prepare, and more moments where hygiene makes the difference between a good and an excellent care environment.

That is why Rijnstate is reinforcing its cleaning teams with SAM®, our autonomous UV-C disinfection robot. SAM takes over the disinfection step: it navigates independently through the space and delivers a consistent, traceable disinfection and without chemicals.

Why UV-C disinfection?

SAM's strength lies not in speed, but in quality, repeatability and traceability.

  • Quality: Manual disinfection effectively covers an average of around 40% of surfaces. SAM consistently scores above 95%. Every run delivers a validated UV-C dose, regardless of who is working, how busy it is, or how late it gets.

  • Repeatability: Every room, every time, the same protocol. No dependency on individual technique or time pressure. As Marc van Kesteren from Spaarne Gasthuis put it: "By hand, you get a four at best; with SAM, always a nine-and-a-half."

  • Traceability: Every disinfection run is logged: who, when, where, how long. A digital audit report that demonstrates compliance — something that is simply not possible with a chemical wipe.

  • No chemicals: SAM works entirely without biocides. No residues, no ventilation needed, no risk of biocide resistance. At Spaarne Gasthuis Hoofddorp, SAM saves approximately 2.5 litres of chemical disinfectant daily. On an annual basis, that means thousands of litres and disposable wipes fewer.

Supporting staff during peak periods

Especially during an event like the European Transplant Games, when workloads are higher than usual, SAM's deployment shows what technology can mean for healthcare. The robot takes over the most intensive part of disinfection, allowing staff to focus on where they add the most value: direct patient care and a welcoming environment for international participants.

This fits within Rijnstate's broader vision: deploying robotics where the need is highest and technology truly makes a difference. It is not a replacement for people, but a reinforcement. An extra pair of hands at the moment it is needed most.

SAM in healthcare

Rijnstate is one of many hospitals working with SAM. From the operating room to patient rooms, from isolation rooms to outpatient clinics - wherever a reliable and traceable disinfection process makes the difference, SAM is deployed. Read, for example, how Tergooi MC and CSU fully integrated SAM in the OR within a week.

Sport, care and technology in balance

The European Transplant Games 2026 show what is possible when people work together. Participants who return to sport after a transplant. Healthcare professionals who open their doors to patients from abroad. And technology that ensures a safe, clean environment in the background.

At Loop Robots, we are proud that SAM can contribute to this.
